History
For several years, the
members and leaders of Lucas Christian Church (now Faith Fellowship Church
- FFC) shared a dream and desire for a Christian school. They envisioned a school where students are taught and
discipled in a caring, Christian environment with a full offering of
classes from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
In 1998, a team was formed to begin researching what it would take
to start a school. During
this planning phase, a small group of teachers and students were drawn
together and started "Classes at Lucas" in August, 1999. These classes
were formed from their ongoing research and served as a foundation for
Lucas Christian Academy (LCA). The
students in these classes flourished and grew!
The FCC congregation was able to witness the possibilities that a
Christian school could have. This
was the confirmation they were seeking.
During the following
months, the church was led along paths that continued to point toward
establishing LCA. Through
prayers and research they found an educational model called
University-Model Schooling (UMS) in use at Grace Preparatory Academy
(GPA), in Arlington, TX. With the tools and training provided by GPA, along with
God's direction and blessings, LCA opened its doors in the fall of 2000
with fifty-seven students in 7th-11th grades.
In its second year of operation, LCA expanded to kindergarten and
6th-12th grades with one hundred and six students. At this time, LCA
needed larger facilities so FFC provided a six thousand square foot
educational building on its premises and purchased twenty-two acres for
future church and school expansion. By year three, there were one hundred
and thirty-six students at LCA. The fourth year (2003-2004) saw 1st-5th
grades added, which completed the vision for a complete K-12th grade
school. Enrollment swelled to two hundred and forty-six students. This
increased student population led to the purchase of two additional
classroom buildings and an office building to house administrative staff.
In addition to adding five
elementary grades, the 2003-2004 school year saw LCA certified by the
National Association of University Model Schools (NAUMS).
Representatives of NAUMS visited the LCA campus in January 2004 and
were so impressed that LCA was certified in record time. Since the certification, LCA has become a flagship school for
NAUMS and regularly provides speakers for their yearly leadership and
teacher conferences.
The 2005-2006 school year saw
a major change for LCA; i.e., the introduction of Tuesday/Thursday
classes. After prayer and much discussion, the LCA Advisory
Board and administration decided to
move kindergarten and some upper level secondary classes to
Tuesday/Thursday. The catalyst for this change was two-pronged.
First, space challenges required that LCA expand its course offerings to
Tuesday/Thursday. Second, LCA saw the need to prepare its upper
secondary students for the challenge of college and university
classes that meet twice a week.
In our seventh year of
operation (2006-2007) we hired an Elementary Director and added additional
staff to our academic team. By
far the most significant change for LCA was becoming autonomous from FCC.
With this autonomy came prayerful discussions to seek God's plan
for the future. In the
2007-2008 school year, LCA changed to block scheduling for 4th-6th grades
and added elementary classes on Tuesday/Thursday.
Currently, we are not only
looking for the land the Lord has for us, but we continue to grow and fine
tune.
